The Tree-Ring Laboratory facilitates research activities related to the analysis and interpretation of tree-rings. It provides workspace, specialist equipment and attached office space. Specialist equipment contained in the lab includes microscopes, measuring stages, flat-bed scanner, light tables, and various computers. There is also an associated wood store and a shared workshop.

The School of Environment has well equipped workshops for building field equipment as well as boats and vans for fieldwork.
The Geology grinding room
The grinding room equipment is used in the preparation of thin sections, polished thin sections and polished mounts for petrographical work. Polished materials also allow the application of surface techniques, such as electron microprobe, ICP-MS, cathodo-luminescence. The slab saw and slab polisher are used in the preparation of polished slabs, used in textural descriptions.
