General Education courses
The General Education programme is a distinct feature of The University Auckland's undergraduate degrees. Students include in their degree two courses outside of their main field of study.
The programme consists of high quality, intellectually challenging courses taught by some of the University's best teachers and researchers. Students will be able to choose from a range of subjects including a number of new interdisciplinary courses. With General Education as part of their degree, students will be in the company of graduates from other top international universities, which recognise the value of a well-rouded education. The University of Auckland graduates will be better prepared for the workforce, with a broad range of skills and understanding complementing their specialist knowledge.
The General Education website provides information about the courses available for each degree. Students should take their two General Education courses in different subjects and in subjects whuch they are not already enrolled or are intending to enrol. Students with prior knowledge of a language (For example, students with prior knowledge of a language (for example, students who have studied the language at high school or who are native speakers) cannot take that language for General Education. Some General Education course have limitations on enrolment numbers and places in these course will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Some courses available for General Education are also available as part of regular degree requirements, for example SCIGEN 101 and SCIGEN 101G. The content and assessment for both occurrences of the course are the same, but students must enrol in the 'G' version of the course for it to count towards their General Education component.
No, General Education course will be taught and assessed in the same way as other University of Auckland courses, and will be included in GPA calcuations. All students enrolled in courses available for General Education and for regular degree requirements will carry out the same work and complete the same requirements.
General Education courses are organised into eight schedules. Students will select their courses depending on the degree (or conjoint degrees combination) for which they are enrolled. The table below lists General Education courses that are taught by staff from the School of Environment.
