Mr Suyadi Suyadi
I was born and grew up in the forest of Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, Sumatra and I have worked for over 17 years in the field of biology and conservation. I started my conservation journey in 1997 to help the Wildlife Conservation Society to establish a research station in the forest and assisted research on a wide variety topics including forest dynamics, primate and bird conservation, large mammal conservation, wildlife population dynamics, socio-economic survey, GIS/Remote Sensing, and landscape ecology. My current research interest include mangrove ecology, coastal process, spatial analysis, carbon, climate change, and biodiversity. I am also interested in oceanography and marine conservation.
Now, I am doing my PhD – Environmental Science at the University of Auckland. For my PhD research, I am interested in the mangrove forest cover dynamics, its causes, and carbon storage. Given the increasing debate over mangrove values and management in Auckland partly due to public pressure to remove mangroves, I am interested in the investigation of mangrove forest cover change, it causes at the watershed scale, and their potential to mitigate carbon emissions especially to help the implementation of the Auckland’s Low Carbon Action Plan.
